Soul Of The Burkitshi

Here, ‘Ata’ sits with a member of his family, gazing at the cold outdoors thinking what future lies ahead for himself, his Eagle (who will soon be sent back into the wild) and the family that surround him and the long standing tradition. With changing climate, a smaller more attainable world, and a dying tradition, there is much to ponder for Ata and his legacy. The Burkitshi Eagle Hunters are a dying breed and it is estimated that there are only fifty or sixty “true” hunters left.

‘Atasi’ means Grandfather in Kazakh. Although everyone knows him as ‘Ata’, this is ‘Koshegen’, 63 year old Grandfather, Eagle Hunter and patriarch of the village and its local tradition in the Altai Mountains. Photographing him was a real honour for me. When I travelled to Mongolia these are the kind of characters I imagined I would meet, and I was not disappointed – Ata certainly portrayed the Soul of the Burkitshi and as the implicit leader of the tribe I wish him all the best with their future endeavours.
