Mongolian Milkmaid

Each morning in the nomadic life of Mongolian Eagle hunting families it is the wives’ job to go into their yards in close to -30ºC temperatures and milk their yaks to stock milk for the day. Their staple diet is mainly produce from their yaks (yak milk tea, cheese and biscuits) as well as other animal meats. I spent hours watching these wonderful and kind ladies unceremoniously go about what for us would be incredibly tough tasks. They kept a close eye on me but provided me with plenty of warmth, food and drink (yak milk tea). So much can be translated through facial expressions and body language it was easy enough to see that they didn’t quite understand why I wanted to watch them at work so much and put a lens in their faces. And so to give them a little more privacy whilst they worked, I found some interesting perspectives from which to point my lens. This shot of ‘Mereke’ (mother of 2) is special for me – it takes me back to that moment that she caught my eye (lens) straight away, and the framing of her face with the brick walls that they build by hand only complements the essence of that perspective: a little insight framed with the distance that will always be between someone like her and someone like me.
